Manage updates with the Download App
I have an Acer Aspire 5100 Windows Vista Home Premium, Service pack 2.. AMD Turion(tm) 64x2 Mobile Tech TL-50 1.60 GHz.. Memory (RAM) 1.00 GB.. 32-bit Operating System. Windows update wants to download a Driver but when it tries it codes out stating the name is in use as either a service name or a display name. The Driver name is: ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller. The best I can figure out is this could be for Silicon Image Storage ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller 127 KB on my computer. Thing is even when I set the option to remind me later it some times will try and install when I shut down my compter. Each time this happens when I boot up I get a message telling me windows needs repair. All tests pass and windows starts. The possible reason is due to a driver install or program. What happens next is my Anti-virus and spyware protection kicks out and I have to install again. Any ideas?

Please don't accept Windows Update Drivers UNLESS you are willing to deal with the worse possible scenario and are deft with the ways of System Restore and driver rollback.
Glad it failed so try hiding that update!

I thank you Bob, I keep doing that have, also changed setting in updates, No Drivers, dealt with System Restore now and again as for driver rollback,never, I didn't let that happen, guess I had some luck there or my thinking hat was up to date 
. It is a pest to keep saying no but would it be best to just click on, Don't and be dome with it? I only ask with that option saying if I do this then things will not work. I can't recall how it is actually put but I'm sure you no what I mean, hope so.

I have to run Internet Explorer or Windows Update from the Start button and then hide that item.
http://www.petri.co.il/hide_updates_windows_vista.htm has more and pictures for Vista.

previously Vista, Microsoft keeps offering me an updated driver for my NVIDIA video card. My "Windows Update", (in the Control Panel), is set to notify me, but let me decide, so each time this appears I right click the entry and hide it.
I learnt years ago that Microsoft doesn't do drivers very well.
One of these days I will have to go to the NVIDIA site itself and check for updated drivers, but there is a general maxim here, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
