Windows Vista forum: Windows Explorer Crash

Thanks, but why is it that the explorer crashes whenever I load Windows, and only for the first time? It does not crash again until I restart my computer.

Application and system logs have to say about the problem?

They are a good place to start and pay attention to the Source of the error and the ID number of the event as well as the description.

Thumbnail creation created a nice every other time boot crash.

I'm unsure if you took the time to move the video and images out of the folder you open and off the desktop.

That is, I don't want to duplicate prior discussions. But your post makes me think you never heard of this issue.

from the desktop go to Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View.
Place a tick to select the first option under Files and Folders in Advanced Settings along side 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'.
You should now be able to open folders containing video clips without crashing Explorer.
Video clip files will show an icon representing the Media Player Application like WMV etc, go through them and try to open/play the video clips.

The ones that fail to play and report an error, are the ones causing Explorer to crash when it tries to render a thumbnail for them. Find the right codec to play these clips successfully or remove them from your system and you can reactivate Thumbnails by reversing the Folder Option setting.

This also applies to Win7.

It is still crashing for me too, so it seems like the thumbnails are not the problem, especially since it only crashes once per new session, as soon as I do anything related to explorer, i.e. Open documents, computer, right click and select anything from the context menu.... the task bar and gadgets vanish when this happen, so explorer must have crashed, then reload without any notifications, and a strange thing that happens is that whatever I click, Documents opens automatically. So it seems like there's something fishy going on. My PC is clean though, no viruses or spyware.

Those can be installed by the user to extend the right click functionality. Could be that for some reason they crash the first time?
