Windows Vista forum: Vista x64-mouse cursor constantly flashes "busy"

Any file, say from my C: drive. Like Documents files, etc. That's when the mouse goes nuts.

I have Norton 360, and that's all. The Windows firewall is turned off. Actually, for some odd reason, it now is working properly. I turned off Norton just to check this, and it was flicker-free, similarly when I restarted Norton, so I guess I'll have to wait until it does it again for me to winnow down the culprits.

My cursor flashes the busy symbol less often, but for no apparent reason. It occurs about once every 4-5 seconds, and it does so whenever the mouse is on the desktop or anywhere it shows the regular icon. When inside this text window it changes to the text cursor and ceases to flash. I changed the icon only to have the new one act the same.

I am running windows 7 and avast anti-virus. I have windows firewall on, but haven't really made any other changes to this recently new computer. I ran a full scan and boot scan, and found nothing of any concern. Any ideas on why this is happening? I have seen lots of posts but most issues seem to be related to programs like word or files.

I have been experiencing the same problem now for at least the last 5 days or so. I had an power outage during the start up of windows. I have been fighting to get things back to normal ever since. I have come from the BSOD to just a all black screen and a mouse cursor for 6 hours straight (I shut down the system after getting no activity in 6 hours). I somehow managed to get the system restore to run in safe mode and then it wouldn't restart afterwards because the restore didn't take. I then had to attempt to do a windows repair booting in from the install disc. I now have windows back running now but it's very buggy. I have done so much to get to where I am now I can't even remember all that I have done. I have gotten things pretty well under control with the exception of the mouse cursor showing busy when ever it's not being used as a text cursor and at one point the windows in Windows Explorer would move up and down 2 to 3 lines at a time constantly. I some how did something that made that stop what I did I don't know. I have used registry cleaners, windows system checker/repair and my Norton 360 scans in hopes of pinning down this problem. Nothing has worked thus far. I am completely stumped on this one. And... as stated by someone earlier the problem seems to be getting worse. There has to be a solution for this one. I am fully open to suggestions at this point.

Wow I almost knew that this would be the responce that I would get for this issue. I knew because after all that I have tried I would have suggested the same thing. The Issue here is that I have so many online purchased programs on this drive and it will be very dfficult to get it all back in one swoop. I do agree that this is easiest way to resolve any corruption issues in windows. I just hate to go that route. I was hoping that just one person had that hail mary to save the day... I think I will hold off just a little longer in hopes that all isn't lost just yet. Thank you for your help and, you are most likely right in what you suggest that I do too.

I have a new computer, more powerful than the one I had for the OP, and I can honestly say that almost every problem I had was resolved because the computer has Win7 instead of Vista. I wish I had all that time back that I spent trying to get Fallout3 or Dragon Age to work in Vista.

Sorry for the OT, but as a gamer, I really came to despise Vista.
