I like that one. I see MSFT has some patch plus you see that interaction of Norton which I can't explain why Symantec rarely answers.

I agree with that statement and want to add that recovery from such backups when things go wrong is another story.
Look at SYNCBACK. I use that!

- How do you try to backup your hard drive?
- Why do you want to backup your hard drive?
- Why can't you do it?
- What do you mean with "The problem is in Vista"? How do you know it's not in the hardware or on the hard disk?
- Who did you ask for an answer (google, your local computer shop, your mother-in-law?), and what exactly did you ask?
- What kind of issues do ypu experience in Outlook and Word?
- Why do you think they are related?

every day when my PC tries to do an automatic back up to an external hard drive, or when I try to do it manually

- Why do you want to backup your hard drive? Because I have had a crash and lost vital data in the past
- Why can't you do it? THAT IS MY QUESTION!!
- What do you mean with "The problem is in Vista"? How do you know it's not in the hardware or on the hard disk? On one occassion received a prompt that there was a problem in VISTA and no solution available when I clicked on the solutions prompt
- Who did you ask for an answer (google, your local computer shop, your mother-in-law?), and what exactly did you ask?- I have inquired to Microsoft and to PC maker (Toshiba)and asked same question as here
- What kind of issues do ypu experience in Outlook and Word? Just recently, they freeze, become unresponsive, and need to restart PC to use again.
- Why do you think they are related? I don't know that they are. I am far from a PC expert. Just need it to work! Worried about losing my data,

It's totally clear now. I didn't see the link between the message and the backup, but now I see.
The solutions are already noted by Bob. Such as:
- install that patch
- use another backup program (like SYNCBACK or SYNCTOY)
