Screen goes black after "resuming windows" message. Ideas?

Hi I'm running Windows Vista on a Dell inspiron 1720 laptop. After hibernation, I got the Dell splash screen, then the "resuming windows" message and then it went to black (no cursor or anything). I forced a reboot but the same thing happened. I've looked through a few forums for suggestions but they mostly require that I choose options that I can't get at. I've tried:

-F6 (which I was told was safe mode), but nothing happened.
-I was able to get to the set up screen (I hit F2 when the Dell splash page was up) but couldn't find anything that was relevant. when I exited set up, it went back into "resuming windows" then black screen.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Try unplugging all USB devices next time.

not a usb issue

thanks, but there's nothing plugged in the usb ports.
I accessed the diagnostics window (from the Dell splash page) and ran all the tests, but it said everything was ok.
But I still can't get past the "resuming windows" page...
Other ideas?

F8 key and watch for a delete restart data and proceed to system boot menu option. Try that choice.
