Recovery drive D Can't delete files

I have a Dell Desktop Inspiron 530 with Vista. I keep getting a message that my D drive is full and to click the icon to clean the drive. The pop up says, " You can use Disk Cleanup to free up 0 bytes of disk space on Recovery D." So that's useless. I also can't use the restore function on my computer because the computer tells me I have no restore points. I need suggestions to free up space on recovery drive D. I have tons of ram and my other drive is 90% free.

The D: drive is a partition on your main drive that contains an image of the factory installed operating system to be used to completely reinstall the OS. IT IS NOT TO BE USED TO STORE ANYTHING. You need a second drive either internal or external.

If you havr no Restore Points, you need to go to the Restore page in the Control Panel and turn Restore on.

I don't store anything on the D drive but my computer does such as restore points. There is something wrong with the diskclean utility. Can I reformat the d drive only? Will I be able to restore it to the factory settings? Will I lose all the updates?

-> Yes. Right-click the drive in My Computer and choose the Format option.


"Will I be able to restore it to the factory settings?"
-> Once you format that partition, you will only be able to restore your computer using the manufacturer's system recovery discs, burned from that partition, following the instructions in the owner's manual, or ordered from that manufacturer.


"Will I lose all the updates?"
-> No. That partition is just a backup copy of the operating system and updates.

On the Dells I use that message is always disabled. I have begun to suspect that registry cleaners tamper with that setting.

As you have a Drive D: it is not a protected drive so I expect this to work.
