Recovery Disk D Windows Vista

My Dell Dimension E 520 desk top constantly alerts that Recovery Disk D on the hard drive is low on capacity. When I look into the drive there are only a few files that add up to nothing like the 9 gb that it is supposed to hold. Auto back-ups fail because of lack of capacity on this drive, so what is taking up the 9 gb?
I would like to back-up on to my external hard drive as an alternative as this has plenty of capacity, but this fails too. Would I need a special programme to make this back-up?

That is a Dell utility, not part of Windows, and it is not designed to be customizable by you, the user. Thus, you cannot move it to an external drive and you may not be able to see the full contents even if you enable the viewing of hidden files and protected system files. You can, however, resize the partition (GParted is a free solution) to give it more room to grow.

Regardless, it is strongly recommended that you burn a set of recovery DVDs from that partition using the preinstalled Dell utility since that partition will not be available to restore from should the hard drive fail or should you encounter some instances of file corruption.
