DVD/CD ROM does not read discs

I have a compaq SR2150NX using Vista. I've been trying for about a year to search for a "fix" for my CD/DVD Rom. I've even tried to use an external DVD/CD drive connected via USB to see if that would work. I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, but can't seem to get my issue resolved. I can see both the external and internal drives in "My Computer" but when I put a disc in I can hear it spin but the computer and the drives do not communicate.

My assumption at this point is that there is a major issue with the computer. Can anyone confirm this for me or advise if they know of a fix? I appreciate the assistance!

possible solution..

Try going to Start-Programs-Accesories-System Tools-System Information-Tools- Direct X Diagnostic Tool and try looking for your CD Drive and check on it's Status to find out how your computer recognizes thats its running. If its good your problem might be in the lens of the driver(most likely if its old). Goodluck!

Try deleting upper and lower filters...

The problem description is slightly different, but the issue is usually the same, so click here and follow the instructions from Microsoft to delete the upper and lower filters from your system registry and then reboot.

Vista reading Drives

I've had a similar problem with my laptop's CD/DVD drive. Sometimes it reads them, and sometimes it does not. This is what I've found:

Every 4-5 disks, the operating system (vista) stops recognizing my drive. To fix this, I go to Device Manager-> Action and scan for hardware updates. It might take a few minutes for this option to show up. Make sure you close and restart any applications you're running (i.e. WMP, etc).

The scan *should* work and find the drive. It's not a fix to the problem, but it's a way to get around it without restarting, etc. Note that I installed a new disk drive all together and still had the same problems. I've also updated drivers with no change.
