Firefox : Google search options (language & region)

Hi

Posting this on Vista forum only because I could not find the forum to post question about Firefox regardless the OS. (and I use Vista)

You know on Firefox you get Google/Wiki/Amazon etc search engines on top-right. Looks like mine is set to Hong Kong Google and give me loads of Chinese web sites as a search result.

But I am not a Chinese speaker and only the reason I can think of why this is happening is my time zone setting (in Control Panel) is Beijing/Hong Kong time. Or I bought this PC in Hong Kong. (as I live in Hong Kong)

Is that the reason?

Other possible settings that could affect to this are:
Control Panel ---> Regional and Language option --> Formats (Japanese)

Control Panel ---> Regional and Language option --> location (Japan)

Control Panel ---> Regional and Language option --> Keyboard (Japanese/Microsoft IME) & (Default US English/Chinese Hong Kong)


Any ideas?

Although I would also change the Regional/Language settings, click on the little arrow in the Firefox search box, select Manage Search Engines, remove those entries, close that window, then visit google.com, wikipedia.com, etc. (or whichever country's version you prefer) and add them to your search bar. (A small indicator should appear in the search bar when a search engine exists for the site you're viewing and has not yet been added.)

Hi

I tried to follow your instruction and I think I know what you mean by 'small indicator'. Isn't it blue dot?

But it doesn't do for Google.com
It only does for this page:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=google&cat=4%2C0

But in this firefox adds-on page I couldn't fine Google.com either.
I think all I want is the English version (US or UK) Google search engine.

Will keep looking....

I dont know what I did but while opening the Google.com English version, I deleted the Google from the mini bar and did "Restore Default" from "Managing Search Engines".... that worked.

Hope this is a permanent solution and won't go away when the next time I restart the PC...

Easy method to change language

In the url bar, type in

about:config

find the line:

general.useragent.locale

and change to en-US for us language.

click o.k. close and then open a new browser.
