Windows Vista forum: My mouse pointer disappears

I had tried all that you say. I have good results with the pointer trail activation. but this is only a workaround.. We NEED a permanent resolve form Hp-Vista-Nvidia..

I went through the whole discussion (so far 59 posts!) before adding my 2 cents: First of all, although not exclusive from HP laptops (Compaq, Pavilion, etc), the problem seems to be strongly linked to these laptops. Secondly, it is also related to using an external monitor (I have an HP Pavilion DV7 and a 20"Samnsung Screen); let me just clarify I dont use my laptop and external screen simultaneously, I only use the external. Third: I never had the problem until I upgraded from Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Professional... Fourth: The problem is definitively related with restarting from a Sleep or Hibernate mode; whenever I reboot the issue is temporarily solved. Fifth: My laptop has ATI Radeon graphics, so the issue is not exclusive of Nvidia chipsets. Sixth: In my case the pointer always disappears when using pull down menus in IE8 (although it also disappears with different programs. Resolution? Not yet! Although I reinstalled mouse and monitor drivers many times this didn't work. I also tried activating mouse tails, but this is annoying and the pointer still disappears. So far my only resolution is I keep shutting down/restarting my laptop instead of sleeping/hibernating. I know this is annoying but better than living with the issue. The only good thing is shutting down/restarting in Windows 7 is much, much faster than in Vista. Oh! and the support I have received from Microsoft and HP on this issue = 0.

@caffeinebump: Thanks much for your advice; I just started turning off my external monitor BEFORE Sleeping or Hibernating my laptop and it seems to work well! My mouse is not longer disappearing after turning the laptop back on. I just have one additional question: Are you (like me) just using the external monitor? I ask because in my case my laptop screen is off all the time, therefore I have to leave my mouse pointer over the Sleep or Hibernate icon just before turning off my monitor. Then I just click the mouse button without moving it, because I can't see a thing after turning off my monitor. In any case, this really works. Thanks again caffeinebump for your feedback.

Thanks much for your suggestion, it makes lots of sense. In any case I figured out an alternative solution too: I programmed my laptop Power button to start a hibernation process instead of turning of the computer, this way I just have to push the button after turning off my external screen. So far working very nice.

I think you'll probably all notice that this happens when the CPU is under High load. I had to roll back my video driver to fix it.

A quickfix for me has been to press CONTROL-ALT-DEL. I have a TouchSmart tx2 running Windows7 and dual monitors including a ViewSonic and the laptop's.

This is a simple fix. Simply minimize Media Center, open magnifier, close magnifier. Done.

Apparently the magnifier does not work with the Media Center. The cursor is meant to disappear in Media Center when it is not active.

Many programs are designed to hide the cursor when entering full screen mode to give you a better multimedia experience. Decreasing the screen size will keep the cursor on the screen. Microsoft Internet Explorer is a primary exception because they assume you'll still have use for the mouse, not be using it solely for multimedia content. However, moving the mouse is usually supposed to display the cursor again, for a limited time.

I was shocked to see that this issue was around in 2007, but that might make sense. Maybe Microstooge moved to a new graphical subsystem, but the Microstooge OS says INTEL(R) DUAL DISPLAY CLONE. Interesting, is is this an Intel issue or Microstooge?

Well, it's September 2011 and this issue still exists. But what really brought it out was a hardware change from a CRT to a flat panel screen for some reason. I've tried Mouse Tails, which is hideous and is not a solution, and going in to single monitor operating mode, and that does not work either. I am going nuts trying to find my mouse and select a tab, a slider, click on a link, etc.

I am running a KVM switch between a small Sony Vaio laptop and a RedHat Linux box. This is soooo irritating, but I am glad that it is only occurring on the Microsoft box. The Linux box so far... I do not see this, and maybe that is why X-Windows rocks and I will be getting rid of my Microstooge box and getting an Apple. At least it is Unix and also has X-Windows support.

If Balmer cannot get Windows to work by 2011, they never will and we are supporting a dead man walking, but I am concerned it is Intel.
