Windows Vista forum: NIS 2007 and Vista

I just purchased a new Laptop with Vista Home premium. The laptop came preinstalled with McAfee anti Virus. Works just fine. I would assume the store would accept an exchange for these products since the Norton is not working.

I ran into the same problem with Norton Internet Security 2007 and Vista Home Premium. The way I got it to work was remove the Norton from my computer with their removal tool and downloaded the 15 day trial version from Symantec as that seems to be Vista compatable. Some where it will ask if you have purchised the program and if so it asks for the key code. I put the code in and it loaded. That seems to work as I no longer get the non compatibility errors I was getting. I have done a couple scans and used all the features and it seems to work OK.
I have not tried yet to download the add-on so will see today how that goes.

Vista versions were made up from the same "code". That said, Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate are exactly the same except for the extra 'add-ons" if you will. The only reason the versions are different is because of the key Microsoft puts in each version. The different keys unlock these different extra features relevant to Home Premium and Ultimate. So basically, a Vista Basic should function exactly like a Vista Ultimate. Sorry this doesn't help your theory but at least this puts out wrong guessing...

I purchased Trend Micro Pc Cillin 2007 at staples and found that it didn't work with Vista Home Premium (even though staples website confirmed that it would work). I proceeded to take the software back and was told by the "Manager" that I could not return or exchange the software. Usually, stores like Best Buy will at least exchange it but I was not able to do either at staples. Once you've bought the software, that's it.

Hello and good afternoon Bob. Thank you so much for your comment on this matter. You are not alone in telling me to "jump ship" to McAfee. So how is your experience with McAfee? Have you ever used a Symantec product in the past? If so, how do the two compare? I too am very frustrated with Symantec. Does McAfee use Americans for their technical and customer support? I hate it when I call for IT support and I get someone in India whose name is "Nick, Peter, Paul, etc". How does McAfee Internet Security 2007 compare to NIS 2007? I look forward to hearing from you Bob.

Bob thank you for the advice. I am looking at going towards McAfee Total Protection software package and I am going to trade my NIS 2007 back at CompUSA. I called my local store today and they told me that people are returning NIS 2007 in droves these are people that upgraded to Vista back on Tuesday. Oddly enough I recieved a call from Symantec today....Pigs must be flying.....They "assured" me that the NIS 2007 and Vista compatibility issues will be solved tomorrow. I am not holding my breath I checked out ZoneAlarm also but they have no definite Vista updates nowhere on their website. Therefore, I will be going with McAfee if I don't hear nothing from Symantec. I like to have everything in one package from one software provider I don't like to mix-n-match when it comes to my PC security. I look forward to hearing from you soon Bob.

Thank you Stone for the comment. So what are you using to protect your computer? I have been on the phone today with Symantec for HOURS now going around and around in circles with them. I am simply just rehashing the same information I gave them yesterday. They claim that they are working on the problem and I have emailed Corporate HQ with my problems. I am getting real sick and tired of their games and BS. I find it incredible that a multi-billion dollar corporation like them can screw up so royally. AMAZING.....That they are still in business.

sudeeptomar (Pete) Who are you kidding? Customer service starts with speaking the language of the person that you are suppose to be helping and actually helping that individual! There is nothing worse than having to call in the first place on something that is brand new and should be working. Then to get Sanyujay (Mark) who can't speak a lick of english let alone understand it! If very upsetting! You might be a very wise and smart computer tech, but when I spend $2000 on a PC from Dell or Purchase a software program from a company I expect to be able to call tech support and get my problem taken care of quickly! As it is now I spend 20 minutes just trying to get an indian employee to learn how to say my name correctly.

Example: I spent over 2 hours on the phone with Gupta (Fred) from Dell and explained to him what I wanted to do with my system, and he proceeded to tell me what I needed to do. I am no educated Tech, but I do know enough to know that a wireless router does no good if there are no components in your household that do not have a wireless receiver. Fred insisted the product he was sending me was going to work and that I needed to trust his knowledge of DELL products. Like a fool I did and for the next 9 months DELL kept charging me finance charges for an item I sent back the next day. Then they only refunded me the cost of the item and none of the finance charges!

So please before you start repremanding somebody for telling it like it is, put yourself in our shoes!

I Just had to have Vista, so I rushed out and got it the day of release 30 Jan for us here in Australia. Big mistake. I found out that I'd have to uninstall ALL my Norton software... NIS06, NSW06 and NRS. Then a couple of days later they release an update for NIS06 - great - so I updated it then installed Vista (Home Premium 32 bit upgrade). Everything was fine except no NSW or NRS. Then about an hour or so later NIS decided to stop working??!! It needed to be activated??!! It already was. So I click the big red button FIX NOW and I get an error. I have contacted Symantec about this and actually got a reply about an hour later! After a few emails they said it was a problem with subscription synchronising. So I'm supposted to click on the subscription link and add my code there. One problem - there is no subscription link??!! It was there when NIS was working - but now it's not?? So after waiting and waiting for Symantec to get back to me. I just used a backup I made before installing Vista and restored my system back to XP. I tried re-installing Vista a couple of days later and same thing happened??!! NIS works perfectly fine for an hour or so then stops working. And I don't understand my they removed the ad blocking and anti-spam features only to offer them in an add-on, which by the way won't be out until the end of March vor Vista. What on earth is Symantec up to???

I bought it as a download and then I used their auto update to make it Vista "compatible". So I don't have the download package anymore. I think I might have to uninstall and re-install it - but without the download package that's going to be tad bit hard.

And I'm still waiting for them to get back to me.

Try this:

1) Pull network cable out so you are not connected to internet
2) Disable Windows firewall
3) Install NIS 2007
4) When it asks you to activate NIS plug cable back in.

Roxy you are so right. I fell into that "Vista Ready" on the box crap with Symantec also. Then come to find out later that NIS2007 is compatible with the BETA version Vista (RC2) and not the RTM version (Release To Market). I was like WTF??!! Incredible simply incredible Roxy....

I know exactly what you are going through. After being a Symantec customer for years now I am no longer a customer with them. I find it incredible that a multi-billlion dollar (USD) company cannot make adequate software. MS released the initial source code for Vista to software developers and makers so that they can update exisiting RTM (Release To Market) software or to make all new versions of software ready to go. I see why people use Macs and if this whole world wasn't in the grips of the WinTel Industrial Corporatists then I would go with an Apple machine Symantec has the worse customer service ever...I went with McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 and it installed flawlessly on my Vista Ultimate machine and that was before I had to go online and download the "Vista Update" from their website. Hmmm it makes you wonder ehh??!! Good luck in your future endeavors and I look forward to hearing from you in the future...

As part of CompUSA's advice to me, I was told to download that same Vista update from Symantec's website. The idiot at CompUSA told me it would load a cover program that would then enable my IS2007 to install itself. He was wrong; it was actually a download of a "Vista-enabled" version of IS2007. However, once it loaded up, it came to a screen announcing "incomplete configuration", with a button labeled "Continue" to complete the configuration. What happened then? You can probably guess it: not a darned thing! Clicking on Continue caused some minor disk activity but the screen never went away and the installation remained incomplete. Now, this was on Vista Home Premium, pre-loaded in my brand-new HP Pavilion PC, so it's not like I was trying to put it onto one of my home-built PCs with a non-standard configuration. Bottom line: no buyer should have to go through these hassles to get IS2007 to work. If Symantec had its "sierra" together, they'd have fully Vista-enabled and debugged software in all the stores by now. The fact they are resorting to such draconian methods to make the software viable this late in the game, and their abysmal Tech Support service out of East Asia, is totally inexcusable. BTW, I took my copy of IS2007 directly to the manager at my local CompUSA, explained about the 4 hrs of personal time and trouble I'd gone through trying to make it work, and he cheerfully gave me a refund. Next time the Symantec rep shows up at his store, I hope he shoves all those bogus CDs where the sun don't shine!
