Windows Vista forum: wmpnetwk.net ???

Here are a couple notes:

1.) wmpnetwk.net is not part of or associated with Windows Vista...it's something foreign.

2.) A web search for wmpnetwk.net turned up nothing, so it's not a known item.

3.) The ".net" extension means it is not an application. I searched my hard drive (with both XP and Vista installed) and didn't find a single file with that extension either, meaning it's foreign itself.

4.) A search of the extension indicates it belongs to FileMaker Pro Networking Module, netViz Project, Network Configuration, OrCAD Netlist Output File, or a number of other programs/extension functions.

Have him search his hard drive and find out where that file is located...that should give you some clue as to what it is related to. My guess is that it came along with some P2P or multimedia software he installed. That would explain the name and why it is eating bandwidth so fast.

Personally, I'd run a full virus scan on the hard drive now and see what, if anything, he has contracted. Since you're networked, I'd scan your computer as well to make sure you're clean.

Now, what do you mean you cannot shut it down or delete it? Is it giving you an 'access denied' error when you try to terminate the process in Task Manger? If so, MoveOnBoot should be able to remove it, provided you can find the file's location.

P.S. You can't just "uninstall" Vista...you must wipe the partition of all data and reinstall XP and all software from scratch, restoring all files from backup.

I have posted on this forum before about my cpu using an entire core doing nothing apart from running system idle process, well, today the problem got worse, but at least this time I could see it was wmpnetwrk.exe killing my audio quality in (ironically) WMP. It hasn't fixed the whole problem, but its got my pc back to "normal" (only one CPU at 100%).

I totally agree with bhnospamhere's comments on Microsoft. I am running XP pro and just discovered this little "upgrade" running on my machine today.

I am very angry, though not surprised that Microsoft would install a service like this on my machine without asking directly, especially since it is such a resource hog and I'm not even using it. I can't imagine if I had a slower machine or actually used my WMP library.

On top of all that, I have made sure the sharing option was Unchecked (turned off) within Media Player (which I hardly even use except when I have to), and surprise surprise even after a restart the service is still there sucking up resources. Had to disable it within the 'Services' console of windows. What a bunch of BS.

I have to be honest. This seems all too fishy too me. My reason being, I have an xbox 360, and a zune media player. (microsofts answer to the ipod) With the update for wmp11 to share my media for the 360, I also was forced to install basically a huge, pointless wannabe version of wmp called lamely:zune. It has nearly every single thing the same, except it is a dull brown color, its largely slower, and the graphics for it are slow and terrible. but my point here is that this situation has happened to me twice. The first time my laptop became very heated and I had to wait nearly 5 minutes for taskmanager to come up. I saw the problems but by the time I was actually able to click on them(which was a good 15 minutes after it began) the processes had ended. the second time was about ten minutes ago, and before it got too bad I was able to disable sharing on my zune player. however it still ran for a few on wmp. but the thing I find odd, is that I have two processes running simultaneously, and seemingly spontaneously that both have the same creator. the reason for them is media sharing. so either someone wants to see what I have, or I am having media stolen from me.. either way its a huge invasion of my privacy and is certainly a nuisance at that. I really hope to hear more about this, because there is something extremely fishy going on, and I don't like it one bit. thanks for the rant time. now someone figure it out!

I just came across this problem today. If you are using WMP 11+, check under the streaming tab that you do not in fact have streaming enabled to any network PC's. I just had enabled streaming (Win7/WMP12)because I wanted to listen to music from a remote box while I worked on mine. I too noticed that wmpnetwk.exe started slowing my PC way down. I simple went under the streaming tab again and set it back to "block" which was the default for the PC I was streaming too and wmpnetwk.exe began behaving again almost immediately. I'd say, if you're using homegroups in Win7, don't bother turning this on and just play stuff through sharing. If you aren't using the "stream" functionality, you should be just fine.
