Download songs to my desktop

I have 2 iPods and when I plug them into my computer I get a nice little autoplay window that asks me (among other things) if I want to open the device to see its files. I do, and then can drag and drop songs from either of the iPods to my music folder.

My friend recently got a new iPod and gave me his old one. When I plug that one into my computer I get no autoplay window with choices. When I look under "Computer/removable devices" I do not see this iPod (whereas I always can see the others). So how can I copy songs to my computer?

If I run iTunes, it shows up there, but when I try to drag and drop to my music folder, I get that little red circle with a line through it indicating that function cannot be performed.

You seem to be new at using iTunes. I've never dragged and dropped to my music folder for my iPod. Maybe there's a video on how to add music? Yup. Here's one of thousands.

I'm sorry, but I think you've misunderstood my problem.

Let me clarify.

Yes, the ipod does work. If I put headphones into it, and call up any of the several hundred songs on it, they play perfectly well through the headphones.

If I try to load a song onto the iPod from my computer, Yes! it will load just fine! I can play it and hear it playing on that iPod through the headphones. In fact, I can play it through my computer if I just double click on that song in iTunes, it will play from the iPod through my computer speakers!

I can see every single one of the 543 songs that are on the iPod through the iTunes window on my computer.

That is Not the problem.

The problem is that I cannot take a song that is on the iPod and put it into my Computer.

(Your suspicion was correct, though. I am new to iTunes. . . . . . happy )

The iPod is not designed to do what you want.

The flow of music is one way only, Computer to iPod.

To get the tracks off that iPod and into iTunes, you will need a piece of software called iRip.

Works on PC and Mac.

Well, that explains it!

Not sure why two iPods allow transferring to my computer and one doesn't. Possibly the one is a much newer device. Looks newer. Has touch screen. Others are classic style with that silver ring that you run your finger around to search lists.

Anyway, you understood my problem and answered it. Thanks.

Unfortunately the trial version of iRip ran out after only 3 transfers. I was going slow and transferring 20 songs at a time just to see if it was working okay.

Now I have to pay $20 if I want to get the rest. Sigh . . . . . . . .

But thanks again.
