What happened to my iPhone 5, iTunes playlists?

Suddenly, without plugging my iPhone 5 into a computer to sync or without doing anything differently--all of my playlists are gone from the iPhone!
They're still in iTunes on my new Macbook Air--but I don't sync the phone with iTunes via USB any longer.
What could have happened? How do I restore just the playlists? (All of the music is still on my iPhone).
