Synch iPad with iTunes Problem

When I synch my wife's ipad with itunes I get what I think is a complete synch however no music appears on her ipad after synch claims to be complete.I do not have the iPad and Laptop connected because she is concerned with all the music in iTunes being downloaded to her new iPad . Then sometimes the synch completes and ends of with the synch'd song replacing one already on the playlist. I followed the instructions in the Apple Guide for the iPad 3 for syncing with iTunes. My OS is windows vista home premium, my laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1720. Please help. Thank you.

On your laptop, open iTunes and create a Playlist

for the iPad.
Now drag whatever music your wife wants on the iPad, into that playlist.

Attach the iPad to the laptop and when it appears in the left hand pane, click on it.

In the Summary section, choose Sync only checked songs and videos
In the Music section, choose Sync Music, Selected Playlists and in the Playlist section, put a check mark in the box next to the playlist you created.

Now only music that is in the playlist will go to the iPad.

When I set up a new playlist

with a new name and drag whatever music my wife wants on the iPad, into that playlist, and follow your valued instructions again, will the new playlist replace the previous playlist already on the iPad? If so, how can one avoid this happening?

then nothing will change. Both playlists will be on the iPad at the end of the sync.

However, if you mean will the existing music go away, then the answer is yes.

Make sure that the existing music on the iPad is included in the Playlist(s) that you are creating for the iPad.

If it is music that was purchased directly from the iTunes Music Store, it will be automatically transferred from the iPad to the computer when the iPad is synced.
