iPod Classic won't dismount

When I finish updating my iPod Classic (gen. 5.5), I try to dismount it by either clicking the "pyramid" icon (the Eject icon) for it in iTunes, or dragging the iPod icon on the desktop to the Trash/Eject icon on the dock. This removes the iPod from iTunes and from the Desktop, but the iPod has NOT been released. It still shows "Do not disconnect" in its window.
Going to Disk Utility, sure enough, the iPod is still there. I can eject it from there. But--why can't I eject it as I used to, by one of the methods described above? Why do I have to open and use Disk Utility to make my iMac (i5 27" running OS 10.6.8 with iTunes 10.6.1) eject it?
