Best way to get internet reception with an Ipad

I am thinking of getting an iPad and would like to know how I can best access the internet while in foreign countries.

My son works for Delta and I get flight benefits but it is hard for me to log on at airports in many foreign countries because it is hard for me to see the Delta account on a little smartphone.

I have heard of mobile wi fi hotspots but don't know if they work in Europe, Africa, etc.

So the iPad would be a nice idea if you have an issue with the pocket sized screens.

As to the hotspots, Sprint's price was 300 a month in Taiwan so I said forget that and used hotel and other hotspots.
