iPhones, iPods, and iPads forum: CD to computer to ipod; is it possible; & how do you do it?

That's called 'ripping a CD'. It's a 2 step process:
1. Rip the CD into the iTunes library using iTunes
2. Synchronize the iTunes library with the iPod using iTunes

You can use other programs to do the ripping (such as CDEX, Windows Media Player) and - if you don't have an iPod but another mp3-player - you use another program to copy the mp3's from the ripping to the player. But since you ask specifically about an iPod, the above way is the 'official' way.

the iTunes library can easily handle the number of tracks that you are referring to.

I would suggest the iPod Classic which has a 160GB storage capacity which should hold around 40,000 tracks.

Here are the steps:

-Install iTunes on your PC or Mac

-Purchase an iPod you like of adequate size for your music collection. See specifications @ apple.com to get a sense of what will fit on the various capacity iPods. Don't forget about space for growth, or for installing apps if you go with an iPod touch.

-Rip your CD collection using iTunes

-Sync your new iPod with your new iTunes library

-Enjoy!

*Personally, I suggest re-ripping the whole CD library instead of importing your old MP3s, unless you no longer have the original source discs that you sent to your Sony. Most people use the highest ATRAC3 compression settings on their minidiscs, which are more akin to variable bit rate MP3s that dont' sound as good. But I have seen some other methods mentioned if you have material to import from an old minidisc. Stick with the digital ouput of your minidisc if possible. Audacity would be the monkey-in-the-middle software to achieve this goal.
