replace cds with iPod?

I have over 500 cds and am considering getting a classic iPod to transfer them. I have a 300 cd changer that I have stored only a handful of cds--time consuming to catalog. Thinking Classic iPod and an external speaker would give me more space--rid of cds--and be portable. Any pros or cons?

I have an acquaintance that MOVED all their CDs to some iPod then they deleted the library and gave away the CDs. They dropped the iPod and lost their collection. They didn't think it through.

A penny of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Sure, rip your CDs but *always* backup your library in at least two places/different formats. For example, given the fact that you can often find a 1TB external drive for $50-60, that would be the more convenient place to put a backup of your music. [Original CDs are kept in storage if you maintain an archive of your originals.] Next, clone/copy the contents of this external to a second external that is placed in a friend's closet, etc. Third, burn copies of your digital files on a series of inexpensive DVDs. Done. Enjoy your iPod & speakers wink.

You could also back your music up using cloud storage. Either Itunes Match or Google Music should have more than enough space to store 300 cds worth of music.

The only suggestion I would add to this is that currently, cloud storage should be taken with a grain of salt. First and foremost should be backups you control, then something convenient like the cloud.

iTunes Match

iTunes Match costs $24.99 fyi and I think it's not worth it because it has a lot of glitches and it doesn't even support ALL songs in my library. I personally just keep a 1 TB or 2 TB hard drive and keep all my music in there. Maybe I'm just not used to the whole digital storage method yet but I don't find any problem with the old school hard drive storage.

I definitely agree with your comments regarding iTunes match. Plus, my music library is too large to make that solution as effective as maintaining it manually over time. Redundancy is key regardless.

If you do use cloud storage, it's a good idea to make sure every song from every album uploaded is there. It can be extremely frustrating when you wanna listen to a specific song from the album but it was left off.
