IPhone/iPad freeze during Step 3 of backup sync with iTunes.

I am not able to synch my iPhone or iPad1 using iTunes. When it gets to Step 3.(purchased apps), iTunes freezes. I have deleted the backup files, reset the reset both devices from the handsets and still the same problem. Anyone with similar issue? My next thought is to delete iTunes and reinstall.
