Can I use this charger with my new iPhone?

I bought an iPhone last week. I want to charge it at my bedside and use it as an alarm clock so I bought a dock for 9.99 from Mobilefun. The label underneath says "PDA Cradle - Recharging for your device - USB Data Hotsync - LED Power Indicator". It has another label saying "For Apple iPhone 3G Black". It did the job admirably for the first couple of nights but this morning when I checked the time it showed the message iPhone does not support this charger. (It had charged the battery though). I removed the phone and reconnected it. I got the same message with a very large exclamation mark. I removed the iPhone from the dock altogether. Would it damage the iPhone if continue to use this dock/charger? It is excellent and just what I need but I obviously don't want to risk the 449 I paid for the phone or invalidate the guarantee
