Convert basic iPhone headphones ti "in-ear"?

I have the original earbuds that came with my iPhone 3Gs. I also have an inexpensive set of SkullCandy in-ear headphones. Would it be possible to cut off the Apple earbuds (above the mic and controls) and replace them with the SkullCandy in-ear buds, rather than pay $80 for an Apple set?

1) Any reason this is not possible?
2) Will I lose too much audio quality?

to achieve that task, then attempt it.

You did not give a reason for wanting to exchange the ear buds. Have they stopped working? Uncomfortable?

As long as you managed to connect the correct strands together, it would probably work.
Worst case scenario? You end up with two non-working headsets and still have to pay out for a new one.
Do you have to purchase the $80 Apple set, or could you just get the Skull Candy in ear headphones for the iPhone from Amazon for $64.00?

Thank you for the reply.

-The Apple earbuds won't stay in my ears.
-I thoroughly looked at alternative sets a few months ago, and NOTHING had the full functionality (mic, vol, click, etc.) of the Apple In-Ear.
-I was able to get an Apple In-Ear set off ebay for about $50. So I'm open to play with the 'old' earbuds and headphones. I have also ALWAYS received great warranty support from Apple.
-I have dabbled in elec/wiring, so I thought I might give it a go after the new set arrives.

3. Which SK set are you referring to?

As an aside to CNet, you need to fix these forums. Your thread listing page is wasting massive amounts of space, and we NEED to see ALL previous posts when on a 'reply' page, not just one.

I Googled SK in ear for Mac

As for the forum, go to the forum feedback page and post your comments there.

They will get seen and acted upon better there.

Comments are also better coming from users, rather than Mods.
