Stupid me!

I spent so much time trying to figure out how to download/install only Safari 4 to 3GS from iTunes on my XP PC....finally called Apple to find out I cannot install Safari 4 without OS 3.1, and now I feel less stupid for not being able to figure it out. At this time, I do not want 3.1.

I see that my Apple Software Update program lists Safari 4 individually......would that be an option?....but then it would not go to the iphone.

That said, this might qualify as a "stupid" question -- Does it matter if the 3GS is on, asleep or off when downloading/installing?

I'm not sure what your problem is. What are you trying to do? Install a new version of Safari on your iPhone?? If so, the ONLY way to do that (stress "the only way", again) is update the iPhone to 3.1, which by the way, is a good idea anyway. I don't understand your reasoning for not wanting to update.

The reason you cannot get Safari 4 to install through iTunes, is that the ONLY version of Safari you can download on your PC is the version specifically for Windows, NOT for iPhone. Note-the only way to install applications on your iPhone is through the app store. Also, no it doesn't matter whether your phone is asleep or off when you sync.

Now, all that said, I have updated from 3.0 to 3.1, and Safari is exactly the same as far as I can tell.

Anyway, there isn't any reason to not update. 3.1 is more stable and a little faster than 3.0. It's a good update. Get it.

My problem is that I wanted to install only Safari 4 and not OS 3.1 and have been confused by conversations with Apple PC phone techs. I have spoken to two Apple techs about some config problems. The sum of both conversations also contained the following:

1. 3.1 is a small update that I don't need unless there are problems with my 3GS (since I had no problems, I decided not to update).

2. It was suggested that I update to iTunes 9 (which I did) and Safari 4 and omit 3.1 for above reason (evidently they did not know that Safari 4 for iphone came along with 3.1).

3. My reasons for not wanting to update from 3.0 to 3.1: in addition to what I stated in 1., on the Apple forums there are quite a lot of complaints and problems from users who went to 3.1.

I will eventually get to 3.1 -- been my experience to wait a while before installing new releases. I can get along without the MMS option and Safari 4 for now.

I figured that Safari 4 on the Apple Download page was for Windows, and I have already downloaded applications to my phone.

Last night I updated to 3.1.2 and also installed MMS. According to your post and unless I misunderstood, Safari 4 was included in the 3.1.2 update. You wrote:

Since I could not validate Safari 4 was on the phone, I checked with Apple. I was told that 3.1.2 does not include Safari 4. Perhaps, that is the reason your Safari is "the same as far as you can tell".
