Why is my Itunes missing songs

I just got a new computer in may and I wanted to move my itunes music and stuff from the old one (That runs Windows XP) to the new one (That runs Windows Vista). But when I installed it and did all the settings it wouldn't find all of my songs (All of my stuff was moved to an external drive by dragging and dropping).Also, I moved all of the .itl and what ever files to the new computer. So now I have not been able to do anything with my ipod and itunes.

Did you consolidate your library before the move?

when you say that iTunes is missing songs, do you mean that only some of your tracks are missing or that all of your tracks are missing?
If the former, did you copy all the music from your old computer to the external or just the iTunes Library?
If all the music, reconnect the external and, in iTunes Preferences, consolidate the library.

You:do you mean that only some of your tracks are missing or that all of your tracks are missing?

me:Everything podcasts, music, etc.. is missing

You:did you copy all the music from your old computer to the external or just the iTunes Library?

me:Everything podcasts, music, etc..

You:If all the music, reconnect the external and, in iTunes Preferences, consolidate the library.

Me: I didn't consolidate everything I dragged and dropped

Me:consolidate library? On which computer the old or new one?

You:You did have a fresh copy of iTunes already installed on the new computer?

Me:I moved the itl. file and other files except the music in the itunes folder in the music section of Windows Vista. So, no I don't have a fresh itunes installed on my computer and I also downloaded
a few new songs to that library.


p.s. I'm Sorry if I sound stupid or don't know what I'm talking about.
p.s.s. Are you running Vista? & Thanks for helping me.

Let's start all over again.

The following assumes that the old computer still works and has all your tracks on it.

On the OLD machine.
1. Launch iTunes, go to File > Library > Consolidate Library. (This moves all your tracks into the iTunes Library.
2. On completion, select ALL of your tracks and drag them to the external drive.

On the NEW machine.
1. Get rid of that drag and drop stuff that you did. You cannot install programs like that on a Windows machine.
2. Download, from the Apple web site, and install a new copy of iTunes. Launch it and then close it.
3. Connect the external drive to the new machine
4. Launch iTunes, select Import to library, navigate to the external drive and the folder in which you put all your tracks. Choose that folder. Sit back and watch them all come into your new iTunes library.

I wouldn't run Vista, or any other M$ OS, even if you paid me.

Can't really see any sense in causing myself all that harassment and frustration for no good reason.
