iPhones, iPods, and iPads forum: Is the $30 / month fee worth it for an iPhone?

Well I dont have one but my brother does and from what he tells me its not worth it, he says the service is bad, texting and calling isnt so great all it really is is an ipod with calling.. i mean like i said i dont have one so i couldnt give u a 100% detail i have a samsung instinct with sprint i think that phone is just fine

I would suggest you see if you can find anyone in your area that owns one. Several of the podcasters on Buzz Out Loud have them and complained about the service, particularly downloading data. Apparently AT&T can't handle the amount of data that Iphone users demand. One of the editors at CNET, Molly Wood, let everyone know she got a Blackberry.

Seems to me that type of complaint is dependent on the area you live, so you should check there unless you travel a lot.

BTW, do you rely on text messages? Can the iPhone handle them? I seem to recall hearing a complaint about them, but I didn't pay much attention since I have a contract on Verizon.

I agree with the other posts as far as the service depending on where you live. I live in the Atlanta area and I have never had problems with coverage or dropped calls. I hear many stories about other places, NYC, San Francisco not having good service. All I know is mine works and there is no other phone/internet/iPod device that can do any of these tasks either individually as well as the iPhone, much less in one device. Having a full internet browser either in 3G or wifi keeps me connected and I can safely say it is the coolest piece of technology I have ever seen or owned. Is it worth the extra $15.00 a month to you? My answer is yes without a doubt, but ask yourself what is your coverage area like and how important are each one of these features (iPod, video, GPS, games, internet and phone) to you. I don't personally know anyone who has purchased the iPhone and said it wasn't worth it. I have upgraded each year from the 1G, 3G and 3GS and I'm just as excited with it now as I was when I first brought it home.

Your question blows my mind. Where....where...WHERE can anyone find service on an iphone for $30 a month?!!! The average user pays $80 a month service for 2 years for the iPhone. I pay $30 a month but I programmed the phone to accept this service but this service is limited.

Since I have good coverage here there is no problem with data connections. Here is the scoop. 1) I got rid of my clunky, nagging car navigator. I check the route and traffic and go. I can lookup and call stores and restaurants along the way. Usually pizza 20 min down the road. 2) Got into the campground at 1am so I emailed mom a pic of the tent under the stars so she wouldn't worry. I don't like to call her at 1am. 3) I don't wait at my pc for business emails anymore. 4) I listen to NPR and I used to be one of those driveway listeners. I couldn't turn off the program so I would listen in the car in the driveway till the article was done. Now I just switch to KPCC on the iPhone and walk into the store or house still on my favorite station. It pauses for calls then starts where it left off. 5) we are under construction on the house so we don't have TV. I just iTunes all the shows we regularly watch and listen to them anytime (I'm sick in bed now with Psych) 6) I gave my mom the video camera and I don't carry a calculator anymore. I wish my Swiss Army iPhone came in Red with a big siver cross on the back. It still needs a corkscrew. $30 bucks? I save that every time I find an inexpensive movie theater (not listed on Fandango).
