of course its not because if u have ur iphone/ipod touch and u wanna jailbreak its completey safe and if it was illegal how come all those hackers arent in jail yet

No, jail breaking is not illegal, it just violates the AT&T contract terms. So you're not breaking any laws, you're just violating the contract that you sign when you buy the iphone.

it also makes it so that if the phone breaks or otherwise becomes defective-apple won't even look at the phone. Meaning that if your unlocked phone breaks...you're screwed.

The device is owned by you, it is your propperty, therefor you are free to do what you like with it. Jailbreaking and unlocking is not illegal, but the fact is that AT&T is not happy when you decide to unlock, becourse they offer you an iPhone for a very sharp price.
Therefor they want you to be their customer only for 2 years.

Jailbreaking / unlocking will void your warranty. But really this is only theoretical. You can always re-lock and unlocked iPhone very easily and simple. And if some defect occurs on the hardware of your Phone, Apple will replace/fix the phone ( they will not check if the phone is unlocked at all - usually they just replace the device.)

I just went to the website - thought I had done a fair amount of research into "unlockediphone.info" and their claims of unlocking my phone. I didn't want to use Blackra1n but, since I do not own a MAC, and had heard of it being a 'tethered' unlock....and therefore not reliable.

It seemed like a legit enough site, but after purchasing the 'unlock', I was sent a login and password to the members area of their website.
You want to know what that 'unlock' is? BLACKRA1N!!!
I paid about 45.00(including taxes, and associated purchase fees) for a freaking FREE application that can be downloaded ANYWHERE!!!!

WHAT A RIP-OFF!! THERE IS NO SECRET "Unlock" - THEY ARE TRICKING YOU TO PAY FOR A FREE APPLICATION YOU CAN GET OFF:
