VuPoint Magic Wand

Cannot make this work: Vupoint Magic Wand PDS-ST410-VP; no help from vupoint website. OS Windows XP.
Wand display never came on like the picture in the instructions, but the scan light came on so I finally went ahead with scan anyway. It scanned okay, then I hooked to usb and copied pics to harddrive. Now the display shows "usb" whenever I turn it on and wand will not scan at all. I am not great with gadgets and don't know what to do. Too late to send it back. Can't get them on the phone. Can someone help?
Brand new batteries, microSD memory card is good. The device shows up on My Computer as E:Removeable Disc with Folders DCIM and 100Media, plus MISC. 100Media is now empty after I deleted the pics. Have no idea what to do now.

Sounds defective but one idea. Find another microSD card and keep it small at 1GB and maybe 2. DO NOT FORMAT THAT CARD. And if you do, try it with FAT, FAT16 only. (I won't write how as there are a thousand web pages on that.)
