Why do I get a message that I have an outdated version?

I downloaded and installed the latest version. But when I click the "Check Now" button, nothing happens (the display shows an old result of a scan I ran some time ago using a previous version). If I then click on the button that takes me to the web page, I get a message that I am running an outdated version, even though I just downloaded the latest version!
