Seeking old versions of iPhone apps

I am trying to download an old version of the dictionary.com iphone app which will run on my old-school iPhone running iOS 2.0. Searched for it on download.com: http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=dictionary.com&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DMobile&filter=platform%3DMobile

Here, it shows results for version 1.0, 2.0, and 2.3. Following the link for version 2.0 and clicking "download now" takes me to an iTunes page to download version 2.3 (which will not work with my current version of iOS). What's up with this? How can I download the old version?

In short:

1.) Apple only permits iPhone owners to download software from the iTunes store, for which Apple collects a fee from the developer. Unless you jailbreak your iPhone, you cannot download from other sources. Thus, CNET simply links to the iTunes store, knowing that it is the only option for most iPhone owners.

2.) It is the developer's responsibility to keep the application's listing on CNET Downloads updated. If the developer does not, you may find listings for old versions if the application, which the developer may no longer offer.

Thus, the bad news is you may not be able to find and download the old version for your phone. At least you have a better understanding of the issues you've encountered, though.

Thanks - I contacted the developers. We'll see if they can help out.

I did actually jailbreak my phone. Where else can I find old applications to download?

I've tried searching in Cydia - no luck finding one of the applications I was trying to find, and lately, it is crashing as soon as I launch it.

I've had an iPhone, but never liked the platform or restrictions, so I've stuck with a combination of Windows Mobile and Android. Thus, I don't have much knowledge of iPhone apps, particularly for the recently-legalized jailbreaking community. With the legal issues quenched, I'm sure more options will surface, but in the mean time I hope someone can offer suggestions regarding up-and-coming alternatives to Cydia.

has earlier versions available, i think(i did not have a chance to try it out, yet)

But i believe it to be .ipa file that could be manually transfered to iphone via SSH(dont know much about it, except the fact that it uses Wifi) or Diskaid( or iphone browser via USB).

Just add to the downloaded file extension ".ipa" at the end

Did you find an earlier version yet? I have versions 976.ipa, 1269.ipa and 1728.ipa on an external.
