If not let us know which one.
Alternatively, upload that downloaded file to http://virusscan.jotti.org/en-gb and see if they find any virus in the file. That web site checks with a number of up to date virus scanners.
If it finds nothing, then I suspect this is a 'False Positive' by AVG and you will need to report it directly to AVG themselves.

The download is identified as ver. 2.8, available July 22, and received as an update alert on July 23.

Do you mean you were alerted about this update by CNET's TechTracker? I don't use it myself so I am unsure how it works.
If so, how does it make the update available, by a link? If so, let us have that link please.

Yes, the e-mail contained a link which brought me to the CNet page that displayed the 12MB download.
Your suggestion to test the download via Jotti was most helpful. The download (copied from the file I tried to install) was found to be OK by all 19 of the scanner sources---including AVG no less!
Went back and re-downloaded the EXE file and again tried to install the program. But AVG stopped it again, saying it contained malware which could acquire passwords. So, I would guess that it's a 50-50 call.

I did notice that the guidance above mentions the AVG Free version. If yours is the commercial version the procedure may be different, but hopefully not.

Your information was most helpful. I scanned the downloaded file (which remains in my Downloads partition) with both AVG and Malwarebytes and each reported that there was no infection present.
As suggested, I will pass along these findings together with a copy of the file to AVG.

The subject was about an apparent false positive anti-virus discovery. Your post advertised a YouTube downloader which is not relevant to the discussion.
Also, note Forum Policy that advertising in these forums is not permitted.
