Opera 9.64 Download Problem

I have a Mac OS X, Version 10.4.11 with Intel Core 2 Duo. (I'm more familiar with PCs.)

I have been using Firefox and Safari browsers. I tried to download Opera 9.64 from CNET, and it downloaded "get.pl". Not being sure what would come up, and trusting CNET, I went ahead and said "ok" when pop-up said this contained an application and did I want to download. I also "registered" during the download, thinking it was part of it. Now, I have TextWrangler, and when I click on "About TextWrangler", I get "TextWrangler, a product of Bare Bones Software, Inc., version 2.2.1 (186) of Wed, 14 Feb 2007, copyright 1992-2007 Bare Bones Software, Inc., registered to (me), etc etc etc".

I went to www.Opera.com, tried to download from there, and get a box saying I've "chosen to open Opera_9.64_Setup_Intel.dmg which is a:DMG file from: http://get.opera.com" etc etc. I think this is right.

So, I think there's glitch on CNET(???). Maybe the "get.pl" was supposed to be "get.opera" with a different link?

My question is: Is my Mac okay having downloaded the "get.pl" download of TextWrangler? Please advise and, I hope, put my mind at ease.

It actually is Opera...

I did a quick check and verified that download.com actually is distributing Opera (http://download.cnet.com/Opera/3000-2356_4-10527779.html), but improperly naming it get.pl by default. The PL extension (versus DMG) prevents it from being recognized as a normal application, which is why it is being opened in TextWrangler, an application (advanced text editor) that is preinstalled on OS X. It is not dangerous in the least, and that download will work if you rename it, but I am reporting it so that it can be fixed to avoid future confusion.

At first, not thinking, I renamed it incorrectly, so I used your link and downloaded again. It still showed get.pl but it downloaded a 20.2 MB file. The get.pl from yesterday was still on my list of downloads and it was a 7.9 MB file. Is that big enough for Opera?

After I downloaded it again, I couldn't rename it in the downloads list. Yesterday, when I clicked on it in the downloads, it opened an actual TextWrangler document in (I think) Chinese. It did the same thing today. Being more educated today, I dragged the new get.pl to my applications folder, changed the name to get.dmg and clicked on that. Then, I got the familiar "Drag the Opera icon onto the Applications folder" etc.

So, is something still wrong with the link? Usually, I have no trouble with downloads. Thanks.

-> 7.9MB is the 'standard' English OS X release, without international language support.

-> What you saw were seemingly random characters, a textual representation of the program after compilation. There is also English text towards the end of the file.

-> The download link likely will not be fixed until sometime today or tomorrow, but someone will post back here once it has been corrected.
