What codec to convert video for Vizio TV?

I just hooked up a Vizio E601i-A3 Smart TV. I have a lot of family videos made from different cameras over the years. They all play just fine on my computer but a lot of them do not play on the TV. I get a message that the codec is not supported. I have tried a few convertor programs that I downloaded and it seems to work for a few but not all of the videos. Is there a convertor that will convert all, or at least most videos to work on my Vizio?

No. With that out of the way I will share I use HANDBRAKE a lot.

It is a real waste of time having to use a convertor only to find out that while it converted some files & they worked, others from the same converter program do not. I was looking for something that worked properly every time.

There is no such product.

I bet you may wonder why so let's get that up on the table. It has to do a lot with copyrights. For example let's use FLASH as an example. If I had a FLASH video then Adobe has the license on that encoding and decoding. If I included that, Adobe may want a fee for the feature I'm using.

There is VLC Player that plays just about everything but if you examine how they are able to get away from the license issues you find that their country does not recognize such patents or licenses.

I know folk are a little upset about this mess.

Is the ease of playing anything you throw at it. For that you want a PC. Get a HTPC (home theater PC) and hook it up. Done. No more converting.

Then again, the AppleTV is pretty nice. Anything that plays on iTunes seems to play on that.

I bet a lot of folk are going to learn these lessons.
