Being a rookie at this I would like to start with a free version until I at least understand what I am doing.
I am looking to learn how to create teaching videos.
What I need is an editor where I can insert graphic images (JPG, PDF, etc) into the video stream while I continue talking in the background. At some point these might become animated and/or come from a PowerPoint presentation.
I really don't know what I am looking for. I have downloaded several video editors, but it seemed that none of them could do what I was looking for.
I would appreciate some feedback and advice on what I described doing above is called and know if there is a free video editor out there that I can learn on.

http://cinelerra.org/ is free and from what I can tell will do this.
Are you sure this must be free?

This appears to be a Linux program. I should have mentioned that I am on Windows 7.
I would prefer a free version, because I am not sure if I am even going to do this if it becomes too difficult to learn and produce, and therefore don't want to spend money on something that I end up not using, plus money is tight and I don't want to spend money on something that is too complex or doesn't do what I am looking to do, thus end up not using and wasting money.
That is why I was asking if there was a technical term for doing what I mentioned above.
Once I understand what is involved, the terminology, standardized steps involved and done it a few times, then I will be ready to spend money for a more robust program.
So, I will ask again:
1. What is the technical term for adding a graphic or other video image on top of another video while maintaining the existing audio track?
2. Does there exist a FREE Windows 7 video editor that can do that?
3. If there is no free version, what would be the cheapest video editor available that could do this?
Don't know a free and easy to use title.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx0ZQuQySZU shows the usual Adobe Elements.
If you split off the audio (too many free tools to do that, then you can mix it up later in your post production.
In closing I can't write tutorials in this small space but note there are lot of tutorials out there.
