XP Movie Maker--Not the usual problem w/mp3

I imported an mp3 file into MM without any problem (I've done it many of times before).
When I check the file's properties it's truncated by almost a minute (122 seconds vs 28 seconds).
If I play the same file in Media Player it runs the full time.
I have NO idea what's going on.
I'd appreciate any help/suggestions.

The usual is that the bit rate is not exact and will be off a little. Usually not enough except for every second counts. Since you are an old time user that's what I'd check out.

Perfect.

Took a couple a minutes to get some software from CNET and a few more to increase the bit rate.
.
One follow up, if I may. I boosted the rate all the way to 320. Is that OK of is there a better rate for MM files?

The best rate is one that matches the target. Let's say I'm crafting a Video DVD. Let's find out what bit rate is used in a standard plain Video DVD.

OK, that shows us the standard bit rate is 48 KHz and multiples of that. Since 320 is not evenly divisible by 48 the audio length can be off a little.

Over a longer period this error adds up and may be off by minutes.
