Loading miniDV movies from Canon HV20 to computer

I have a Canon HV20 camcorder that I've been using the past five years. My old laptop had a firewire port but the laptop doesn't have the horsepower (memory or disk space) to accept HD video.

I have a brand new laptop but it doesn't have firewire ports.

Any thoughts on how I can get my miniDV movies off of tape from the HV20 and onto my new laptop. My new laptop is a Toshiba Satellite P755-S5387 and it has multiple USB ports.

Any help would be greatlly appreciated.

1. Use the firewire port of your old laptop to copy the movie from the camcorder to the laptop.
2. Copy the file to your new laptop (via the network, a USB-stick or an external harddisk).
3. Play on your new laptop.

You might need a program to convert the file to a filetype that your media player on the new laptop can play. But just as well, it can play the file as it comes. Or you can install the Canon software that plays it on your new laptop.

Folks have been searching for this a long time but there is no compelling reason to make such a thing. Yes there is a demand but imagine the firestorm of support issues, patent hurdles and more.

No good company will do this one.
