All media players do not work

Hi, this is my first post on CNet and I think that this is the proper subforum to ask this, but if I'm mistaken I'll remove this. And if there is some information that I should add please tell me and I will do so.
I'm running Windows 7 on my desktop computer. Seemingly at random times, all of the media players that I have (ie. MPC, VLC, WMP, WMC, and the Youtube player) do not work. Also, Adobe Air Debugger freezes in the same manner. I can run MPC with no troubles whatsoever, but running any of the aforementioned players with .mp3 and .ogg files, which are the only ones that I've tried, causes them to immediately freeze. MPC opens and the media is stopped, while the program itself is completely unresponsive.
Since the problem is apparently independent of the player or type of media file I can only think that the issue lies in the computer. As I said earlier, this isn't a constant - just last night everything was running smoothly. I turned off the machine and the next day restarted it a few times for unrelated reasons. It's been going on at apparently uneven intervals over at least the last two months and I'm at a loss here.
