OS windows 7 hp 64bitVLC media player.Until now VLC ran OK on the system. Now this error has occurred.VLC has attached itself to all icons to the left located on the task bar.If you fx press the folder icon or the browser icon, VLC opens.If you hit the program menu with the program icons and the listed program shortcuts,and choose a program, VLC opens.In short, no matter what I program I try to open, VLC opens.Never seen this error about VLC before. I'm only able to open any given program, if Igo to the program files folder, and find a icon that starts the program, in the program folder.Do you know about the problem?Can you solve it.If I uninstall VLC, the program icons work again.Thanks.

Some less than great web site.
For now, go to the VLC website and try the PORTABLE VERSION.

The problem is elsewhere. I wonder how conversant you are with file associations.

I'm probably not conversant at all. I had to look it up.a. I have used vlc quiet a while. And the error first appeared now. And I can't remember Imade something different.b. After uninstalling vlc, I reinstalled and choose no file associations. Made no difference. And the error is, that vlc is attaching itself not only to media files, but to all program icons onthe task bar, and to all programs in the program list.Thanks.
At this point I have 2 ideas.

1. It's an association issue. But why? (see idea 2)
2. Some malware does this. There's another reason but rare since you have to install about 1,000 apps to trigger it so I rarely note it.
Grif has some ideas and apps to find and remove the malware. Here's the link.
