WMP 12 Error Code and Crashes

HELP!!!

I keep on getting this error message every time I try to open a video that uses WMP. "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:"). (-1072885317)"

I have WMP12 on Windows 7 and I have searched high and low through the internet for a solution. I have tried uninstalling/installing WMP, running a command code and deleting a file (I got that from the official microsoft.com support page), and also renaming a folder. Nothing has worked and I'm so frustrated. I even did a reinstall of Windows 7!

When I run the command code (regsvr32 wmnetmgr.dll) the video will load but before it can play, something else pops up about my firewall blocking the video. But before I can click the "Allow Access" button, the computer reboots itself. After the rebooting though, it goes back to the original error message.

If anyone knows what to do/has anything different suggestions other than what I have already done, please let me know!

Is this a video from a web site?

I would have thought that the firewall pop-up would only occur if this video is on some web site or other. Is that right? If so, which video and which web site?

If the video is stored on your local hard drive and the firewall pops-up then I would be suspicious of this video. In that case can you tell us more about the video?

Which firewall are you using? Does it allow WMP to access the internet?

Yes, a lecture video

Yes, it is a lecture from a website. Its where my school puts videos of lecture so that students can watch it again. It's sponsored through mediasite. Other computers can access the videos just fine. I just have regular Windows Firewall and WMP does have access to the internet and the program is allowed through Windows Firewall. I have taken my laptop to the school's IT guys and they didn't know what was wrong either. They said that they'd never seen anything like it before.

That could be a good clue

If the video is in a web site then this is not the full WMP installed on your system but a browser "plugin".

Can you confirm it is the WMP plugin? Only it is generally Flash Player used now for web site videos. To confirm that, right click the video area and see what the right click menu says.

I'm a little confused about the firewall intervention. Firewalls normally let everything through in a browser window because they have already given the browser permission to access the internet, so what the browser does then is irrelevant to the firewall. Can you confirm that this pop-up warning is from the Windows Firewall and not some other security application you have installed?

And the exact message the pop-up says would be useful as well.

Mark, first off, I'd like to thank you for replying and being so diligent with my problem. I really appreciate it.

Secondly, I'm not really sure what you mean by a browser plug in. I don't recall having to install any type of plugin's prior to watching the video. When I right clicked on the video and under plugin options there is nothing there (you know, under the "Add and configure plugins" box.)

The firewall intervention is from Windows Security Alert and says:
"Windows Firewall has blocked some features of Internet Explorer on all public and private networks.
Name: Internet Explorer
Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
Path: C:\program files (x86)\internet explorer\iexplore.exe
Allow Internet Explorer to communiate on these networks:
Private networks, such as my home or work network [THIS BOX IS UNCHECKED]
Public networks, such as those in airports and coffee shops (not recommended because these networks often have little or no security) [THIS BOX IS CHECKED]"

There is an Allow Access and a Cancel button too.

Before I can check the "Private networks, such as my home or work network" box, everything freezes and the whole computer shuts down. I only got what it said because I took a picture using my phone.

Keep in mind that the firewall intervention will pop up only after I register a certain file. I got the command from this site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940029. Under "Resolutions" I have done method 1 and method 3. I am unsure of how to do method 2...

If I don't run the command, then the original message "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:"). (-1072885317)" will pop up (it is also what will pop up after the computer reboots itself after running the command.)

Hi mmchuong, and thanks for the further information.

I'm having difficulty visualising what is going on here. The video is on a web site, but you don't watch it within the browser window?

Which browser are you using, Internet Explorer or some other browser? If some other browser, which one?

Is this a web site that anyone can look at and try, and not protected by a required login? If anyone can access it, please let us have the web site so we can try.

When you click that link in the web site, does WMP open on your Desktop?

I found a number of interesting links and discussions about this, but rather than trying to list them all, may I suggest you Google the same and have a look at what others have to say? There are a range of different options and suggestions.
