extract different instruments from an audio file

I was wondering if one can extract different "layers" like a bass-line or snare, etc from an audio file (like wav, not midi).
In a long dissapointing google-search I only found old forum threads, and that it's not really possible.

I wanted to ask now, if, in the meantime, this became technically possible somehow. Or at least partly possible.

Just curious or what? I think the reason there are no such program is because there are no great need for such which means..not a money maker.

I know of amateur remixes (unauthorized) that have done what you are describing. It is possible, but I haven't the foggiest idea how to go about accomplishing it.
