Realtek ac97, no sound from output jack

Hello all,
PC specs;
Windows XP
AMD AthalonXP 1900+
1.9 Ghz, 640 MB of RAM
30GB HDD
Problem: No sound from the green output jack on the motherboard.
Attempted fixes: I've gone through the Windows help, checking all the possible settings that affect the sound output. All seem to be in order. I've also unistalled and reinstalled the drivers but that didn't fix it either.
If I change the settings to 4-channel and move the speaker cable to the blue jack, I get sound output, but of course, it's the rear speaker sound. I'm trying to play LOTRO, which has surround sound, but I don't hear the front speaker sounds.
I do not have any warnings in device manager. The properties window of the sound device say it's working properly and the drivers are current. "Use audio features on this device" is selected.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your consideration!
