Deals and Bargains forum: Poll: Would you use Amazon lockers?

Read some of the real objections where Staples are located 20 and more miles away, mine is over 45 miles.
How far is it across town? Cry me a river... just vote NO and go.

Amazon is going to pay to give me free shipping? I will increase amazon sales, but I do not think they will make up the difference and could cancel the program after a year of losing money.

I will try them out, I like to shop on Amazon, Staples will win, I do not really compare the two anyway, and now I will be in there to pick up a few impulse items. I think Staples will be doing it for a lower price in about a year to keep Amazon in it's stores, and I could see Brick and mortal big boxes to lose their online orders.

Is staples ready to handle the angry Xmas crowd when their order is not there yet? or damaged?

It hinges on one thing. Where it is located. If it is some virtual locker where I have to wait for someone to fetch an item from out back or can I walk up unlock the locker grab my stuff and go.

I might consider this IF I lived in a place where Staples has a presence.
Where I live, they do not! This is therefore not a solution for me and my
neighbours. They need to find a more common business such as a
pharmacy chain with a presence in smaller locales.

I will watch other sites such as Book Close-outs for better deals, especially
promotions with FREE shipping.

No sales tax here and people from PA MD and NJ drive here to save the sales tax. I use Amazon to save money and local stores for service and convenience but not to save on taxes since they charge sales tax here anyway so no free ride for me.

I have used Amazon lockers several times now without complication and find the service essential. I live alone and work nights. It's hard for me to receive packages at my front door because I am usually asleep when the UPS or FedEx truck comes by. I would prefer to see the Amazon locker service expanded because it allows me to pick up my order at a time convenient to me, usually between 6 and 7AM.
Unfortunately, Amazon does not make this service available from all Amazon partners.
Without it, I would be unable to make more than a handful of Amazon purchases a year. The locker system, even limited as it is, has been a great help.
This sort of operation by other retailers would be really handy for me.

When shopping online I look for the lowest price and compare to the "Brick and Mortar" deducting the shipping from the store price. If Amazon can beat the store price and ship free I might buy more from/through them.

Don't know the motive behind Staples but I think it would increase visiters to the store.

I live too far away. I would spend more on gas than the shipping costs.

I routinely pass on Amazon because of shipping costs. Buy.com usually has none. I buy almost everything from them now. Lockers with NO shipping costs would be a brilliant move and return my business to Amozon.

It really makes me laugh when people think they are getting "free shipping." Seriously, do any of you think that your shipping is free? Brown just decided that you need a little money more than he does. I mean, don't you think that just m a y b e the cost is included in the price you pay and if you get something called free, that the other guy didn't get for free, then that means that he helped pay your cost of shipping, but it still isn't FREE.

The idea is to compete with, or to be like the brick stores that we can order from on line, and take FREE delivery at our neighborhood store. Now that is something that I do all the time and it really is free. Such items are simply taken from the warehouse and trucked to my store with their normal shipments. Everybody gains from it because it reduces the local inventory for low volume items but it still gets the consumer in the store. I would do the same with Amazon dot com if I trusted them a little more.

It is a separate subject - but I'm not a fan of Amazon because I have had really bad luck with them (2 of 3 purchases were never received) and have had NO support or service from them. But never mind my crying, the idea is a great one.

I order items such as cod liver oil, and Geritol , some time the items is $35.00 and it cost $35 to $40 for shipping.
so i cancel the order.

I am a frequent Amazon.com buyer, and even though I have the Amazon Prime Membership, there are still purchases that do not qualify for the Prime free shipping. The shipping costs on most of these items make the total purchase price too high to consider it a bargain. If my non-Prime qualified purchases were available for free shipment to a local brick & mortar store (such as Staples), then this would certainly bring the bargain back to the sale. I am all for this, but have to wonder why I am first hearing about it here on CNET, rather than any mention of it from Amazon.com themselves.

I have prime and I'd wonder about sales tax that I don't now have to pay

Since live several miles from the nearest Staples, it would often cost me more to drive to the locker than to have the product delivered. If I did take the drive, yeah, I would look around the store some.

Stupid idea, the whole point of using Amazon is NOT to suffer the inconvenience of driving into town
