When Vista rolled out, machines with XP didn't get a big discount. Besides you can get good deals on refurbs which most of the time are returns from folk that bought something and returned it shortly.

In other words, I don't expect you to see a firesale. Another reason is they are already clearing such out and the new machines will have a coupon for the Windows 8 update.

As we know from previous experience, upgrading a previous-generation PC to a new version of Windows is not necessarily a carefree experience. Plus, many such "older" machines wouldn't be able to use the new Windows 8 touchscreen capability. Perhaps those two factors would make the older PCs seem obsolete in the minds of many.

At any rate, I'd like to get my hands on a new, cheap PC, wipe Windows 7 off the hard drive, and install a Linux distro to replace it. (Yes, I know that Windows 7 and Linux can coexist on the same HD--no thanks.)

The stores are already clearing those out. The new ones will have pre-tested ready to install Windows 8 so what you know doesn't apply.

Besides you can get cheap desktop PCs today. That's not a challenge at all.
