Buying a used DELL Laptop with warranty ??

by kumar754 - 7/31/12 11:43 AM

1st TIP: Never buy a used electronic product with or without warranty.

I know everyone has concerns when buying used electronic product from eBay, Craigslist or elsewhere. I mostly look out for Warranty stuffs. Never know when its going to fail. I have been using DELL products for a while and till now pretty much good+quick response from Dell.
If you are buying a used dell laptop from eBay or elsewhere, make sure you discuss the warranty stuffs with the seller. Though eBay protects your with Buyers protection plan, but that will be valid only for next 90 days after your make that purchase. Make sure you ask the seller to transfer the ownership of laptop onto you name. This is because, Dell support will not respond to your queries unless the ownership is in your name, even though the warranty is still remaining on this laptop.

There is a way you can transfer ownership on your name. You must know the name and contact of original owner that should match with Dell records. If you are not aware of the original owner. Dell will try to contact the owner for confirmation and once confirmed, the laptop remaining warranty will be transferred onto you name. But in either case if you fail to provide the owners name or Dell team cannot make contacts with the owner, you cannot get warranty transferred to you. At this time you don't have any choice. And if you find out after 90 days of your purchase, you are out of luck.

This happened to me, I bought a laptop from eBay from seller (333_trading). After few months the laptop was completely stalled. I contacted Dell and came to know they cannot service this until ownership is transferred. I contact the seller, but no response. I tried to open claim with eBay and Paypal.. both says its too old and hence cannot be entertained. Dell team tried to contact original owner, they didn't got any response. I still have 2 more years remaining on this laptop, but cannot be serviced.

Be careful when you make your next purchase for a used DELL laptop or any other dell products.
