Mount Plasma TV Above Fireplace on Built-In Mirror

I want to mount a 40" plasma over my living room fireplace. There's a 15 foot tall, by 5 foot wide built-in mirror above the mantle. It is recessed 3 inches into the dry wall. I don't believe it's possible to remove. Does a wall mount exist to hang a tv on the mirror? Would I have to drill through the mirror? Is this even doable? Any suggestions are appreciated. thanks.

a diamond drill putting a hole through the glass, exactly on the stud. This hole would need to be at least 1.5" diameter to support a 1" diameter lag bolt. Ensuring that at least a quarter inch clearance is present between the bolt and the mirror. Four exactly spaced holes are needed in the exact center of the supporting studs, as front mounted cross braces cannot be used. These studs need to be located at the exact locations of the mounting plate for the TV mounting bracket, variance cannot exceed 1/8" on either side of the studs. Neoprene spacers must be used along with spacer nuts to keep the mounting plate from contacting the mirror. Stand off must be at least 1/2"

It can be done. Call a qualified engineer for home video installation. Have money available.

It would probably be possible to install a beam in the 3" recess, and then mount the TV to the beam. You would want to be sure the beam was substantial enough to bear the weight of the TV, and, since it would extend to either side of the TV, come up with some way to finish the exposed portions. Also, you will want to leave a space between the beam and the mirror--perhaps with a styrofoam pad--so that when the beam flexes (hot to cold) it won't press against the mirror. (A "laminated" pair of 1 1/4" LVL's would fit in the recess and provide the necessary support.)
