Earbud shocks

I use to get little shocks in my ears from my earbuds when I used my cassette or CD player. It always happened in the cold weather when I was wearing microfleece outerwear. Apparently, as I was walking, the earbud wire was moving back and forth over the material which produced static electricity. I used fabric softener in the dryer AND a few times each week I rubbed the material and the wire with a fabric softener sheet before I put the device in my pocket and the earbuds in my ears. That eliminated the problem with those devices and my Zen Micro MP3 player. J.K.

ipod shock buds

At my last job I would listen to my iPod at my desk w/ the iPod earbuds. It seemed like every time I would roll my chair across the plastic chair mat while I was sitting down, the buds would shock my ears. I started using different earbuds and the problem diminished but didn't disappear. It was kind of a crackly shock sound in my ear. haha

Sorry, I know it's off topic, but these posts made me laugh and remember a not too disimilar experience of my own.

I used to work nights, a job which allowed me to sleep at work due to huge alarms that would go off if anything ever went wrong.

I was FOREVER getting huge static shocks off of anything metal I touched.

It took me a while to work out what the hell was causing it ...

... turns out it was my lazyness. Instead of getting out of my nylon sleeping bag to turn off the alarms, I'd shuffle, sack-race style, across the carpet tiles and then shuffle back again!

Man it hurt, but it still didn't stop me!

Sorry, a little off topic I know, but I thought it may make some people smile!

The Shocking Truth

I recently bought the new 2G iPod Shuffle. I actually shocked myself the other day with it in the office. It was connected to the computer speakers and when I rolled away from my desk to stand up, I pressed "pause" on the device and received a small shock (not harmful). I have reason to believe it's static electricity.

My previous iPods have never shocked me and I never once used the iBuds.

Shocked my headphones to death

Last January I had to purchase a new set of headphones. My original headphones were shocking me as I walked into work with my fleece jacket open and my scarf swinging back and forth into the headphone wire. I hated to be without my podcasts when I walked into work so I would endure the shocks until my headphones started to produce crackled audio. I was also worried about damaging my iPod.

I decided to buy the $99 Shure headphones with the hopes that the constant shocks would cease to be an issue. I have not had a problem since, cold weather or not. I attribute this to one thing - the thickness of the rubber around the headphone wire. The Shure wire is thick whereas the iPod headphones were pretty thin.

Shocking gym experience

I'm so glad this topic was discussed on BOL last week. A couple of years ago, I was experiencing horrible ear shocks through my headphones while connecting to the closed circuit gym TVs while running on the treadmill. I complained to the gym staff and they looked at me like I was crazy. So it's not just an iPod problem...in fact, I believe I was using Sony headphones at the time.
