why it might not work
What type of connection do you have your tv hooked up to the PS3? I had componet cables and some games didn't work in 1080p like you are talking about but once I started using HDMI cable it worked fine.
i use hdmi cables
Check your tv settings. Make sure your tv is setup for 1080p input.
At this time most the released ps3 titles don't support 1080P. As the ps3 ages though you will see more and more 1080P titles.
I'm sure your 1080p HDTV is upconverting the 720p signal to 1080p anyway...so who cares?
when i press the display button it says 720p
but , when it goes back to the ps3 home screen it says 1080p
and the games i have have support for 1080i
Must change display settings
I've had the same problem. Go into the settings menu in your XMB. Under display settings, choose HDMI which you are using. Instead of using "automatic" for the display settings, choose "custom". ONLY check 1080p. If you check 720p and 1080p, then the PS3 will play your game in 720p. It defaults to the lower resolution for some reason. You will have to go back and check the 720p box if you play a different game that does not support 1080p though.
Hope that helps.
Adjusting the supported resolution formats fixes the problem
Thanks that's what worked for me!!!
i tried the method and instead of 1080p it goes to 480p
Can't play 1080p games in 1080p resolution
When i go to the XMB Settings/Display Settings/Video Output Settings/Select a setting method/Custom option, then 480p option is ALWAYS selected. I can't change it. Then I tried to select only the 1080p option and move on to the right but the screen goes blank and comes back to the "Select All Resolutions tha are supported by your TV" screen. Same happens if i select 1080p and hit the square button to test the resolution. If I select the 720p and 1080i resolutions everything works just fine. Another note: when I play some blu-ray movie, the screen resolution automatically goes to 1080/24p, which is a resolution Sony Bravia TVs provide for watching movies. My TV set is a Sony Bravia 46 FullHD (KLV46W300A). My PS3 software was updated to version 2.30.
I have the same problem. When I go to settings to change the res. 480 is permanently selected. I can check 1080P but when I move to the next screen everything goes dark. My PS3 is connected to a Sony KDL46XBR6. I use HDMI cables. 1080P res was working fine 1 week ago, I turned it on the screen was black and I had to reset the res. Now its seemingly stuck at 480! Argh!
Did anyone figure out how to solve this problem? It just started happening to me and now I am stuck at 480p with a 1080p TV ( pioneer elite ) THanks for any help.
When the ps3 is turned off with the red light still on, press and hold the on button. keep holding it until it beeps the second time. around 6 seconds or more. it will reset your resolution settings. i hope this hellps, reply if this works
Hey thank you for that information. I thought I was going to be forever stuck in this 480p world or there was something wrong with my hardware. I'm glad I didn't throw this thing out the window because I had just given up trying to make this thing work in 1080p. I tell you I tried everything possible steps to make this thing work. Holding on to the on button for 6 seconds is the key.
Why it may not display at full HD.
I know that this is a very old post, but I just had to throw my 2 cents in. You may see a game or two that you have that says that it is full 1080p, but if it will not display as 1080p then it is not the PS3, but 1 of two possibilities, or both. The majority of PS3 games support HDCP (High-Bandwith Digital Content Protection), so having an HDMI cable that supports HDCP (aka Hi-speed) is ideal. The second possible reason would be that some game creators fail to get the proper setting on the game for automatic best picture display. Dead Island: Riptide for example says that it displays anywhere from 480i to 1080p, but the PS3 will only display at 720p, and if you disable all other resolutions and select only 1080p then the game will not show up at all (black screen). This is at fault of the manufacturer of the game, not your PS3 system. If you see 1080p on the back of your game case, but it will not automatically play at 1080p then the creator of the game made a big boo boo. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Great game, older, but displays at full 1080p with no problem, and will display at a lower resolution if your TV doesn't support it. This game was done right by the creator (Konami).
