Copyright Question

Hi Everyone,

I am thinking about making a feature to my fanpage website that displays the latest social network updates for a particular celebrity. I was wondering if it would be copyright infringement to make an RSS feed to their Facebook page, Twitter account, and other social networks that is displayed on my website. I do not own any of these accounts, but I would like the feed to be displayed. Is this copyright infringement? What would I legally be allowed to do?

As to the infringement, mounting a defense such as "everyone else does this" does not work with the judge. I hope you never try that.

I think you need to ask yourself, if you did this without the celebrity's expressed permission to do so, what do you think that celebrity, or their legal advisers, next step would be.

I assume you have read Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities which includes a link to their Privacy Policy.

It will of course be your responsibility to check, understand and follow Facebook's terms and if you are satisfied that you will not be breaking any of these, to then contact the celebrity concerned to obtain their permission.

I assume Twitter and other social networks will have similar conditions and you will need the celebrities permission for all of these.

You might want to contact the celebrity or the celebrity's media/public relationships department to request permission. If you can get permission in writing that might save you from copyright infringement. Of course, if the site from which you get the information says right on it that you can add the RSS feed to your site then by all means you shouldn't have to worry about copyright infringement.
