Small business forum: What type of Server for small business

I support small businesses exclusively and $6K sounds pretty high for your needs. I definitely wouldn't suggest building a box yourself though for a server class machine, even if it's "only" for up to 20 users. Head on over to dell and take and configure yourself a lower-end PowerEdge to get a general idea. Some of the things that you might not be considering that could jack the price are the OS and possibly a backup.

We may have a total of fifty employees that would need to access a server. Can you give me an idea of what I would need to implement a server where the files could be uploaded and viewed by administration?

I'm going to go with the idea someone needs to be fired if they want you to spend 6k for a small network solution. Seriously I'm thinking a computer from a garage could handle this setup. Seriously though I would budget 2k at most and that's if I want to purchase something with a bit of over kill. I would consider a Xeon machine with 2 to 4 gigs memory. Windows 2003 or 2008 would work great. However, I'm not sure if server Os would even be needed or if a server would even be needed. You could likely save and just use a standard machine from a local store for this setup. However, I would address the details with the client as to if they want something that will work right now or something that will provide a solution and continue to work as the office grows. Most clients like to hear options and not just a single solution.
