Need to repair internal CD/DVD drive

I have a Dell Inspiron 9200 laptop, running Windows XP Pro SP2. My problem cropped up just after the manufacturer's warranty expired. (Figures!)
Anyway, the data cable on the CD/DVD combo drive appears to have come loose. When inserting a CD or DVD into the drive, nothing happens other than the LED flashing to indicate that the slot has been closed.
Since the warranty is expired, I'm more inclined to open the beastie up to fix it myself, but I'm a little leery. Do I need to remove the entire bottom panel to get to the drive? Once I get in there, will I have to also disassemble the drive to get the cable reconnected? I suppose I should remove the battery before starting anything, rather than just turning off the power.
I've done disassembly/assembly projects to some degree with desktop PCs, but never with my laptop, which is my baby!
Thanks for your help!
