XP to ? upgrade - available virtualization solutions ?

I find all the chatter over the low extinction rate of
Windows XP somewhat humorous. Microsoft did not
provide an in-place upgrade to Windows 7. Don't you
think this fact is part of the problem? I'm leaning toward
a new hard drive and a clean install of Windows 7 - unless someone can point me to a virtualization solution.
I have a Core 2 Duo system with VT-x and a large HD full of programs and data (>200GB). Reinstallation of
programs is very distasteful when there is a large number required. I've briefly looked at the simple and
free packages without success. Virtual PC can only
handle a 127GB hard drive. Virtual PC 2007 does not
support USB. Paragon Go Virtual seems to have
disappeared. Does anyone know of any free or paid
virtualization packages that might be useful to get a virtualized Windows Xp Home running under Windows 7? A direct path to Windows 8 and Hyper-V is not possible for me without an increase in memory (4GB required, I only have 2GB) Plus, I don't know if my
hardware specs support it!
Any suggestions are appreciated,
